Buccal massage is a facial massage method using specialised manual techniques applied to the facial and jaw muscles both inside and outside the mouth.
It aims particularly to reduce tension accumulated in the chewing muscles, encourage relaxation of the facial muscles and ease the tissues. It may also help support the natural contours of the face, stimulate circulation and contribute to a more rested appearance.
At Rajadent, buccal massage is planned around individual needs, taking facial anatomy and jaw function into account. It offers a holistic approach that brings together aesthetic appearance and functional relaxation.
Benefits of Buccal Massage
The duration and extent of effects can vary from person to person.
- Easing tension in the facial and jaw muscles
- Supporting relaxation of the chewing muscles
- A feeling of facial relaxation and lightness
- Supporting local circulation
- Helping reduce the appearance of temporary facial puffiness
- Supporting a more rested appearance of the natural facial contours
- Supporting a sense of relaxation associated with bodily ease and reduced stress
Muscle Tension, the Nervous System and Emotions
Stress and emotional strain can be expressed through physical responses as well as mental experiences. Jaw clenching, facial muscle tension and changes in facial expression may be associated with the nervous system’s responses to stress.
Sometimes the jaw we clench without noticing, the tension we carry in our face or muscles we find difficult to relax remind us how closely bodily and emotional processes are connected.
Through manual techniques directed at the facial and jaw muscles, buccal massage may support relief of this tension, bodily relaxation and a sense of ease. It may therefore contribute to feeling more comfortable emotionally as well as physically.
How Is Buccal Massage Performed?
The session begins with assessment of the muscles on the outside of the face and work using manual techniques. Specialised techniques are then applied to the cheek and chewing muscles from inside the mouth, with gloves and appropriate hygiene conditions.
Personal comfort and tissue sensitivity are considered throughout the session. Including consultation and preparation, the session lasts approximately 45–60 minutes.

The Importance of Regular Sessions
Muscle relaxation, facial lightness and a sense of ease may be felt after buccal massage. However, the duration and extent of these effects can vary from person to person.
Sessions at regular intervals aim to help manage recurring muscle tension and support a feeling of relaxation in the facial muscles.
Session frequency is determined according to the individual’s muscle structure, level of tension and needs.
Who May It Be Suitable For?
Buccal massage may be considered for people who feel tension in the facial and jaw muscles, experience muscle fatigue associated with teeth clenching or wish to support their face’s natural appearance.
It is not a standalone treatment for teeth clenching (bruxism) or jaw joint disorders. When appropriate, it may be planned as a complementary approach alongside a comprehensive dental assessment.
Every face has different anatomy, needs and patterns of tension. The approach is therefore shaped by an individual assessment.
